Kanekalon Frizz: What are the Effects on Your Hair

Kanekalon fiber for many years was the main stay of the hair replacement industry.

Originally developed for ladies wigs manufacturers soon found it was a good alternative to human hair in hair replacements.

In the 70’s and 80’s the majority of men’s hair replacements were made of a type of hybrid Kanekalon fiber called Toupelon.

The difference between the two fibers is manly in the color availability and a treatment that provided a bit more style retention with the Toupelon fiber.

In the late 80’s the movement went to human hair for the men’s hair piece industry and synthetic fibers were considered passé.

However, Kanekalon fiber was still needed by the industry for gray percentages.

The reason for using the fiber for gray was to assure that should the hair piece need to be colored it could be safely done without the gray percentages being colored as well as the synthetic will not take hair color.

The biggest down side to Kanekalon synthetic fiber is Frizz.

Fiber frizz is usually caused by friction.

This friction can occur from sleeping with the hair piece on the head and the head rubbing on the pillow case or if the wearer always wears a hat or head set. Any where there is a possibility for the hair to rub against something you’ll find frizz.

In some cases the frizz and be flattened out with the use of a curling iron calibrated for low heat specifically for use on synthetic fiber or with steam but once the fiber has frizzed too much it is nearly impossible to get out. For the synthetic hair wearer who sleeps in their hair system it is recommended that a satin pillow case be used to reduce the friction and the synthetic hair wearer should always avoid heat and thermal styling tools.
